The principle of unity expounded by Bahá'u'lláh spans not
only racial, ethnic, and economic concerns, but also gender. The equality of
women and men is seen by Bahá'ís as one of paramount importance for our time.
The Bahá'í writings state:
And among the teachings of
Bahá'u'lláh is the equality of women and men. The world of humanity has two
wings — one is women and the other men. Not until both wings are equally
developed can the bird fly. Should one wing remain weak, flight is impossible.
The human race is indeed crippled when fully half of its
number is kept back from attaining their full potential. Worse, the half that
suffers from this oppression are those that are the first teachers of the next
generation. Bahá'u'lláh calls upon us to ensure the education of all children,
but the education of girls takes priority when lack of resources prevents the
education of all:
If it be considered through the
eye of reality, the training and culture of daughters is more necessary than
that of sons, for these girls will come to the station of motherhood and will
mould the lives of the children. The first trainer of the child is the mother.
Where occupations are concerned, Bahá'ís believe that
humanity will only achieve its full potential when women are represented in a
broad range of careers and occupations. Bahá'u'lláh exalts work done in the
spirit of service to the rank of worship, and calls upon us all, men and women
alike, to engage in some form of occupation according to our callings. Yet it
should also be pointed out that "homemaking is a highly honourable and
responsible work of fundamental importance to society." So this, too, is a
valid occupation.
Of course there are biological and psychological differences
between men and women, but these differences are complementary, enabling us to
achieve together things that could not be achieved individually. Until we
embrace this vision and learn to work together in unity, humanity will remain
crippled. The teachings of the Bahá'í Faith provide the means to do so.
